Asean puts away single currency talk

JIMBARAN: Asean nations continue to focus on strengthening trade integration before discussing further details on the establishment of a single currency.The single currency plan requires longer time for discussion. Then, the higher integration will be discussed after achieving higher volume of goods and services trading, Deputy of Bank Indonesia Halim Alamsyah explained at a seminar of SEACEN Centre titled 'Optimal Central Banking for Financial Stability', today.South East Asian Central Banks (SEACEN) Centre is a forum whose members are central banks of Asean nations and beyond.Halim informed that the economic integration still focuses on realizing the success of Asean Free Trade Agreement (Asean FTA) to enhance transactions of intra-regional trade. Furthermore, Asean Economic Community (AEC) will be established by 2015.He asserted that the establishment of a single currency obliges not only higher trade integration, but also the equality among members economic level. Consequently, nations can not be forced to join in if they are not ready.Yet, he admitted the establishment of joint monetary system will likely generate lots of benefits. (T01/NOM)
