JAKARTA: Palm oil producing countries in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) shall affirm its position in their partnership with European Union.It is highly important to affirm the position of palm oil producing countries in Asean before the European Union, said Deputy Minister of Trade, Mahendra Siregar during Preparatory Meeting of Asean Economic Ministers in Jakarta today.This particular Asean Summit happens to be the proper opportunity to restate the solid position of Southeast Asian palm oil producers, he added.Separately, Mahendra also stated that Asean and European Union agreed to escalate its trading partnership and overcome any trading barriers between those two regions.These two regions shall conduct different approaches in handling the trading sector. In the past, Asean exporters will not be able to export if the products do not suit the applied standards of European Union. This causes particular problems somehow, he said.Thus, as Mahendra added, both regions are trying to change the trading approaches. Asean and European Union commit to end such difference by enhancing the partnership. This partnership shall bridge any trading barriers occurred, he said.For example, the standards imposed by European Union on palm oil products somehow does not match Asean standards. There must be a similar perspective between these two regions in order to deal with palm oil trade. We [Asean] perceive the standards imposed by European Union relatively discriminative, he added.
