Airlines request extra flights as traffic to rise 25%

JAKARTA: Four airlines filed for request yesterday to have 48 additional flights to anticipate the surge of passengers travelling during school holidays.The four airlines filing for such requests were Batavia Air, Garuda Indonesia, Indonesia AirAsia, and Sriwijaya Air, said Hemi Pamuraharajo, a senior official in charge of scheduled air transport at the transport ministry.The request of these extra flights would add another 8,052 seats during the school holiday, he said.Hemi said that the four airlines will increase the flight frequencies on some heavy routes including Jakarta-Denpasar, Jakarta-Balikpapan and Makassar-Balikpapan. Other airlines are likely to file for the same requests."Usually additional flight requests will increase as ticket booking over a holiday season increases," he said, adding that this in turn will raise the non-tax state revenue.Non-tax revenues in the Sub-Directorate of Scheduled Air Transport at the Transport Ministry in the first six months may reach IDR901 million.Outlook on passenger trafficMeanwhile, a spokesman for Indonesia AirAsia Audrey Progastama, said the airline predicts passenger traffic during school holiday to increase by 25%, compared to normal days."Thus, we decided to increase our flight frequency to Bali, one of the favorite destinations," said Audrey.She also said the airline increased the frequency of international flights to Denpasar, Bali and Bandung.
